More Than A Legacy
Poggio San Polo takes its name from the small hamlet, 527 metres up in Gaiole in Chianti, where Ascanio Lapis and Alma Matassini settled in the 1970s to raise their nine children. They planted vines and a garden and lived the way Tuscan families had always lived: close to the land, with little waiting to be wasted. Their children carried that life forward, and in 2005 the first bottle of Chianti Classico was produced, for friends, family and a handful of clients.
In 2016, their grandson Lorenzo Lapis chose to take it further. Where the family had made wine as part of life, he decided to make it the work of his life: to learn each parcel and let it speak for itself, and to ferment naturally. That decision was the beginning of Poggio San Polo as it stands today.
We are still independent and family-owned. We believe the best wine comes from honest and intentional work, from understanding a place deeply, and from the courage to do things your own way.
Winemaking Begins in the Vineyard
Certified organic and sustainable farming, spontaneous fermentations, and minimal intervention in the cellar allow each wine to reflect its origin.

What an unforgettable experience this wine tasting at Cassia and Lorenzo’s was. A beautiful and honest story in the stunning courtyard of an authentic winery. We thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiasm with which Cassia shared the history of their still-young, growing business and the origins of the Chianti. The grapes had just been picked, so we were able to enjoy the freshly spun grapes and the freshly filled fermentation vats. As organic winemakers, they use only authentic processes and materials, drawing on the knowledge of Grandpa and Lorenzo.
They have a delicious Chianti Classico, but fortunately also a very beautiful Chianti Rosé.
The local products served with the wine made the whole experience complete.
If you are looking for a unique experience, this is highly recommended. Truly great value for money.
Thank you, Cassia. We will definitely be back in a few years to see how you have grown. And thank you in advance for sending a delicious box of Chianti. We can enjoy it again at home.

If I could give a 6th star I would. We visited Poggio San Polo during our honeymoon and can earnestly say it was the highlight of our entire Italy experience. Milan, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento are amazing destinations, but Lorenzo and Kassia gave us the most authentic taste of Tuscany, literally and figuratively. Hours flew by as we huddled in their rustic outdoor kitchen making pasta, sampling their wines, and conversing as if we were old friends – that’s how personal and genuine they make you feel when you visit. In the most pleasant turn of events, we had the honor to eat dinner with multiple family members and had a tough time saying our goodbyes. We are already planning our return trip to the vineyard and recommend highly if you are visiting the area to make this one of your stops.

We loved our visit to Poggio San Polo. Kassia our guide was very informative and engaging, and the wine, cheese and meats were all delicious! It was great to see a smaller family run working winery. Great wine, great food, great conversation. Would highly recommend. Thank you 🙂

We were welcomed by Lorenzo and Cassia, two extraordinary and cheerful hosts, who shared their passion for their work with us, taking us on a tour of the estate and explaining their progress.
We had lunch in the tavern, an intimate space that was all ours today, enjoying food entirely produced on their own: everything delicious, authentic, and plentiful. Special mention goes to the tasting of the four organic wines, also produced on-site, which truly impressed us with their quality and character.
It’s a growing business that deserves a special mention. If you’re looking for a place to recharge and enjoy divine food, we absolutely recommend it. We’ll definitely be back!

Lorenzo and Cassia are a passionate young couple who are realizing their dream by building their own winery. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and you can feel the heart and soul they put into every bottle they produce. I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time with them, discussing their story, their vision, and their passion for wine. I quickly felt welcomed as a friend rather than just a visitor.
The setting is magnificent, peaceful, and private. Each glass tasted is accompanied by fascinating explanations that allow you to better understand all the work and love that goes into each bottle.
Their Chianti Classico was a true delight. An elegant, balanced, and memorable wine, reflecting the people who create it.
I am convinced that Lorenzo and Cassia have a very bright future ahead of them. If you’re in the area, treat yourself to this experience. You’ll discover not only excellent wines, but also two inspiring people who truly deserve to be supported.
Thank you, Lorenzo and Cassia, for your warm welcome, your generosity, and your passion. You made my trip to Tuscany truly special, and I’m leaving with wonderful memories… and an excellent bottle of Chianti Classico! I sincerely hope to visit you again someday.
